Malibu boats is relatively a young company in the boating business. It was started in 1982 with President and CEO Robert Alkema’s mission to empower their employees with joint ownership in the company’s boat building business. This co-ownership strategy has resulted in the production of high quality ski and other water sports boats.
From its humble beginnings where Malibu built 100 custom ski boats in a small shop, Malibu is now a leading manufacturer of water sports boats. The boating industry clearly recognizes Malibu’s standard for quality. It has won numerous Product Excellence Awards from industry experts including the exceptional 13 Boat of the Year Awards. Thirteen years after it first built its ski boats, Malibu was up in the sales ladder to take the position of the world’s second largest manufacturer of ski boats.
Malibu’s leadership was further cemented when General Motors commissioned the company in 1997 to build the Corvette Limited Edition Ski Boat, an engineering marvel that set new standards in ski boat design. Malibu boats continued to reap awards and lead sales ratings as it developed new production techniques for its boats complemented with excellent customer service.
Some of the many engineering innovations that Malibu started include the Wedge, Power Wedge, GM Vortec engines, adjustable rudder, one piece glass windshield, standard Precision Pro Speed Control, Gorilla fins, hand wrapped dashes and the dual gas fills.
Malibu boats has approximately 110 dealers throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico that sell, service and promote Malibu boats. It is also the first and only ski boat manufacturer that owns and operates multiple manufacturing facilities on both sides of the coast in California and Tennessee. It also has another manufacturing facility in Australia.
The three manufacturing facilities, set to undergo further expansion in 2006, allow Malibu not only to increase production but also to significantly reduce freight charges for the benefit of dealers and customers.
Malibu also covers other international markets including Russia, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Australia, United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland and South Korea.
