Sylvan boats have been around the pontoon business for around 50 years. In fact, Sylvan is considered a household name in the aluminum fishing boat and recreational boating circles. Sylvan traces its roots in Wolcottville, a rural town in Indiana. It first operated in the late 1940s under the name Sylvan Industries as builder of pontoon boats and small house boats. It most likely derived its name from nearby Sylvan Lake where the company’s plant was located. In 1965, its founder John Cripe decided to sell the business to John Graff who renamed the company to Sylvan Marine. Under Graff’s leadership, Sylvan Marine continued to improve the style and manufacturing processes of its boats. In the early 1970s, Sylvan Marine changed ownership again when John Graff sold the business to his father-in-law Harold Schrock. Sylvan started to produce aluminum fishing boats and runabouts to extend their line of pontoon boats in 1975. Sylvan Marine continued to pursue more innovations over the years, which made the company one of the leaders in the boating industry. Sylvan boats are now manufactured in the company’s main complex in New Paris, Indiana. Sylvan boats are recognized as well-built, comfortable boats that give high performance. Although priced at lower rates, Sylvan boats are packed with features that are usually found only on more expensive models.
