Center console fishing boats are very versatile and easy to maneuver. Such versatility and maneuverability make center consoles good when pursuing various types of fishing activities such as fly fishing, and even big game fishing.

The center console is the most commonly used boat for fly fishing because it provides a large open area for casting and gives the angler greater control. It also offers a safer ride even in not-so-calm waters.

Fly fishing is one style of fishing that makes use of artificial lures that resemble flies, insect, or fish. The use of a very light fishing lure is considered as the most effective way to fly fish. The angler casts the fishing line when fly fishing in contrast to the rod-and-reel style when the angler casts the fishing lure when spinning, spincasting, or baitcasting.

Although anglers can also use walkaround cuddy and large sportfisher boats for fly fishing, the size of the deck structures including the cabin and towers limit the effectiveness of the craft as platform for fly fishing. Larger boats or boats with more deck structures tend to constrain the free movement that a center console boat allows.

If you are fond of fly fishing from your boat, then a center console fishing boat makes a good companion. But as you would with other boats, it is important to prep your center console for your fly fishing activities. The first thing to do is remove all possible items that might cause snags in moving around your boat, particularly in your casting area. Reduce the number of fixed objects such as cleats, deck light covers, rod holders, anchor line guides, and Bimini top hooks. Your fly line could potentially get caught on these things so keep the fixed items to the bare minimum.

In some boats, these items automatically retract into the hull when not in use but this may not apply in all models. One quick way to snag-proof is to cover the items with a wide piece of duct tape so your fly line would not get easily caught in these obstructions.

Make sure that your boat rail is also very sturdy and secure. Your center console should also have ample storage to secure tackle bags and other fishing tools.

Big game fishing
Another type of fishing where a center console may be used is for big game fishing. Although this is quite uncommon, the center console can make a good vessel for big game fishing if it is properly outfitted for the purpose. These small center console boats are very seaworthy and can definitely be used for a big catch.

Of course, there are some improvements and enhancements that must be done to equip the center console for the big task. These things range from rebuilding hatches, reinforcing gunnels, to simple items like extending rod safety lines.

It is true that catching a large game fish with a small boat such as a center console is a challenge. However, it is also a lot of fun and adventure. Small boats are easy to maneuver, faster, and more economical to use than larger boats. By taking the necessary precautions as prepping your boat and double-checking land and marine weather forecasts, you can have a great fishing adventure with your center console.
