Nude sailing?
Probably a shocking thought to some but to other people, sailing naked is a very liberating experience. It is a way of dropping all inhibitions as symbolized by the very clothing one wears and being comfortable in one's own skin – literally and figuratively.
Sailing in itself is already an experience of freedom, of relaxation, of leaving worries behind, of being carefree. Others, however, would want to bring their sailing experience to a higher level of freedom by sailing naked. Some would call this experience naturist sailing, others would refer to it as clothing-optional sailing.
Nude sailing is just one of the forms of nude recreation that is quite getting a growing acceptance among Americans as well as other nationalities. Estimates done in 2003 pegged the nude recreation business in North America to have reached US$400 million. During the same year, the USA Today carried a report on the Yankelovich National Travel Monitor that nearly one out of five Americans would consider as a desirable part of their vacation a resort offering a nude recreation experience or a clothing-optional beach experience.
Interestingly, nude sailing is attracting people from all walks of life. Couples, families, professionals, workers, and even children are getting drawn to this unique and ultimate sailing adventure.
There are charters that specially cater to nude sailing. Usually offered by naturist crew themselves, nude sailing charters usually organize special cruises for this purpose or group them together with fellow naturists. Destinations include exotic places such as the secluded islands of the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands.
The sailing activities are almost the same as any other sailing adventure. They snorkel, dive, swim in pristine beaches, dine at the boat's deck, or just simply marvel at the scenic landscapes by day and the vast heavens by night. What sets the experience apart, though, is the fact that they are doing it the "all natural way". Sans clothes, they enjoy with fellow nudists a unique holiday experience.
Supporters of nude recreation such as naked sailing say that relaxing with friends and loved ones the all natural way is an ultimate fun experience. "Being nude is fun, healthy and good for the soul. It promotes body acceptance, age acceptance, freedom, increased self confidence, more self esteem and celebrates God's greatest creation. It exposes the whole body to the air and sun, and gives people an added incentive to be fit. It is not about sex but about positive, naturist values," thus said the ClothesFree International on why it's worth to give nude recreation a try".
The American Association for Nude Recreation reasons that the body is able to relax faster when it is in its most natural state. It reasons, "Nude recreation helps your body relax faster. When your clothes come off, so do many of the cues holding you to the work-a-day world."
Aside from relaxation, activities such as nude sailing promote greater body acceptance and self-confidence. It is also seen as a great equalizer. After all, you will not be able to tell the difference between a bank president and a bus driver when they are both wearing their birthday suit.
